Your Role

Technical Officers in the Molecular Genetics team support projects that aim to understand the genes and molecular mechanisms underlying trait variation in crop and animal species important to the agricultural sector. The role of this position is to participate in research that applies next-generation genetic and genomic technologies and molecular breeding tools to crop improvement, primarily wheat and barley, followed by pulses, eucalyptus, pine, safflower, canola and forage grasses.

Primary duties and responsibilities include performing techniques for trait dissection based on next-generation DNA/RNA sequencing, genotype-by-sequencing, Infinium iSelect SNP assay, and quantitative and digital droplet PCR. The role primarily involves performing wet-chemistry and may require some data processing and analysis.

Your Skills

  • Experience in a high sample throughput laboratory in which a range of molecular genetics and genomics techniques were applied, including the use of liquid handling robotics.
  • Knowledge and experience in methods for second-generation sequencing and high-throughput genotyping technologies.
  • Ability to organise tasks, manage resources and use initiative and problem solving to efficiently produce high quality outcomes that are achieved within agreed timelines, both independently and working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent record keeping and well developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling and managing large volumes of scientific data using advanced MS Excel and other appropriate software packages.
