About the Role

As a Data Modelling Engineer, you will play a key role supporting Digital Factory projects that fundamentally change BHP’s performance across safety, productivity and people performance. The Digital Factory is BHP’s approach to rapid design and development of digital products (software-focused, minimal or no hardware) that provide data-heavy, machine learning and model-based solutions to operational challenges that are currently being addressed through manual methods.

  • The Data Modelling Engineer is critical in ensuring that data provided to the Assets and used by all Digital Factory Teams – both on premise and cloud-based – is continually improving in quality, and the all data issues are identified, understood and addressed in order to achieve the high quality accurate data and make it available for key stakeholders thus enabling data driven decision making across the organization.
  • The primary responsibility of this role is maintaining, controlling and improving the quality of data provided from all data sources. They will be accountable for designing and modelling data in alignment with broader Asset use-cases and self-serve needs of the Digital Factory Teams and provide highly reusable and scalable data centric services that meets BHP’s data architecture strategy.
  • The Data Modelling Engineer will build and champion the BHP Data Catalogue to encourage reuse and a single view of all BHP data
About the role
  • Experience in a Data Modeller and/or Data Engineer role in an agile setting
  • Love working in a fun, fast-paced collaborative start-up like environment
  • Being customer lead and working with product teams to identify required data, where to source and operational requirements (data capture frequency, known issues, etc.)
  • Work with the Data Domain Owners to understand the Data Domain, Data Entities, Data Standard definitions, Data Classification rules and drive Data Quality framework to drive the Data Strategy.
  • Exposure to building data governance and quality frameworks including (data profiling, data catalog, data dictionary, business glossary and data lineage)
  • Demonstrable experience in developing, validating, publishing and maintaining Logical/Physical data models
  • Exposure to Data Catalogue tools such as Collibra
  • Experience using data modelling tools - e.g. ErWin
  • Experience in working with large datasets, relational databases (SQL), and distributed systems (Hadoop, Spark, Hive) and stream-processing systems (Spark-Streaming)
  • Experience with cloud services such as S3, EC2, EMR, Athena, Kinesis, Airflow and Snowflake
  • Demonstrated experience working across structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data
  • Exposure with source control tools such along with branching and merging concepts. Ideally experience with GitLab for source control and CI/CD.
  • Exposure to working in DevOps, Agile, Scrum, Continuous Delivery and/or Rapid Application Development environments
