The Role

Open Arms, the mental health branch of the Department of Veteran Affairs is seeking a Transition Support Coordinator to work in their services in Canberra.

The role requires someone with lived experience of Australian Defence Force (ADF) Service and of mental health and recovery. The position entails using one’s lived experience to respectfully educate and advise; influencing change with both internal and external stakeholders to improve understandings of military family life, the needs of consumers and carers, and of recovery-oriented, person centred and trauma informed care.

The occupant of this role will deliver high quality program development and project coordination services, with a particular focus on projects that target improved outcomes for veterans and their families during and following key points of transition, inclusive of discharge (in particular medical discharge) from the ADF, post-hospital discharge support and post incarceration.

This role involves the management of multiple competing priorities to ensure timely, effective and coordinated service delivery and the occupant of the position is required to exercise sound professional judgement under limited supervision and apply creative and innovative approaches to complex and sensitive issues.

Essential Criteria

The mandatory requirement for this position is a lived experience of ADF service and of mental health issues and recovery. Ability to respectfully and effectively utilise this experience to mentor and support others, to engage with internal and external stakeholders and to inform service development and improvement activities is essential.

The ideal candidate will have an understanding of mental health services; brings skills and experience in program/service development and project coordination; possesses well-developed writing and oral presentation skills; and has skills in research, management of information, collation of data and producing reports.

The occupant of this position will be required to demonstrate:

Strategic approach. Comprehends the wider contexts, develops long term goals and determines strategies and actions required to achieve those goals.

Interpersonal skills. Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and superiors from across the organisation and externally.
Effective verbal and written communication. Structures and presents information clearly to target audience(s), using approaches that capture audience interest, and which are in accordance with the Commonwealth writing style guidelines.

This position also requires eligibility and a willingness to obtain a Working with Children Check or equivalent.

Desirable Experiece

This position involves utilising lived experience to inform program development in the area of ‘transitions’, therefore applicants should consider their capacity to inform projects with a focus that includes the experience of transitioning from military service.

Previous experience in the mental health sector
A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in mental health (e.g., Certificate IV in Mental Health, Peer Work).
Previous experience in mental health peer work or in lived experience advisory roles.
Experience working in the Australian Public Service
