Ongoing Position – Full Time

The Royal Women’s Hospital is Australia’s first and largest specialist hospital dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of newborns and women of all ages. To join the Women’s is to be instrumental in forging progress towards health equity for women from ground-breaking research through to the bedside delivery of multi-disciplinary clinical care. The Women's is a teaching hospital of the University of Melbourne and has strong academic and research links with the Melbourne Medical School. For suitably qualified applicants, the hospital would support an honorary academic appointment at the University of Melbourne.

The Division

The Social Model of Health Division at the Women’s has responsibility for ensuring the hospital’s clinical and social support services are coordinated, aligned and leveraged to provide wrap around care for the women who need it most. In particular, the division has a focus on ensuring a woman’s social, economic, cultural, environmental, geographic, and other factors are taken into account in her care plan with the overall aim of reducing health inequalities and addressing systemic inadequacies that affect health access and outcomes.

This is a newly formed division bringing together a number of established and critical clinical and social services including:

  • Women’s Mental Health Service

  • Social Work

  • Badjurr-Bulok Wilam, our Aboriginal Health Liaison Service

  • Family Accommodation

  • Women’s Alcohol and Drug Services

  • A range of highly specialised services focused on violence against women, including the Strengthening Hospital Response to Family Violence program, the Centre Against Sexual Assault service and the Sexual Assault Crisis Line

  • The Cornelia Project, a new multi-agency service focused on providing residential care to homeless mothers and babies.

Your contribution 

The Director is responsible for establishing the new Social Model of Health Division, developing and implementing the vision and consolidating the new model of care. In addition, the role oversees the ongoing operations of the Social Model of Health Division to ensure effective, efficient, and integrated high-quality, evidence based clinical and social services are delivered, consistent with the Women's Strategic Plan and the operational and financial accountabilities detailed in the Women’s Statement of Priorities.

About You

To be successful within this role you will need to have:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in a clinical health or social services discipline, such as nursing, midwifery, medicine, psychology or allied health.

  • Demonstrated experience building a culture that promotes gender equity, respect and a safe working environment and have an understanding of cultural safety, violence against women and family violence.

  • Clinical experience (as a clinician and a leader) in relevant clinical services that recognise the impact of social, cultural and gender determinants on health and wellbeing.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of clinical governance, timely, high quality patient care, excellence in clinical practice, and improving the patient experience.

  • Senior leadership and operational management experience within a complex health environment, including demonstrated knowledge of health funding, legislative and regulatory requirements.

  • Proven ability to drive and meet strategic, operational, clinical and financial targets.

  • Experience in providing visible and inspirational leadership, clear vision and direction and demonstrated experience in building, leading and motivating broad, diverse and complex multidisciplinary team(s).

  • Excellent and proven communication skills, including written, verbal and experience and confidence presentencing to broad audiences.

  • A positive and effective track record of leading innovation, continuous improvement, research and change management.

  • Proven ability to manage external relationships through contracts and service level agreements.

  • Proven ability to build rapport, work collaboratively, partner and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders.
