About The Job

It’s an exciting time to be joining our team, with the acceleration of studies for our significant greenfield discovery of our Simandou Project to realise value from the world-class Simandou iron ore deposit.

The primary purpose of the Principal Geotechnical Advisor will be to provide and co-ordinate geotechnical engineering design for the Simandou project. This will lead in to the future operational support for the project.

As the Principal Geotechnical Advisor in our Simandou study team, you are accountable for delivering the geotechnical elements of the project’s feasibility studies on behalf of the technical team. You will be a key liaison point between the Simandou study and the Copper technical team as the project transitions to operation. You will need to ensure that the fast-evolving technical information is incorporated throughout the study process and includes working with the project’s Mine Engineers, Hydrogeologists, Geologists, Infrastructure Geotechnical and Tailings specialists.

Key activities to be undertaken will include, but not be limited to
  • Providing Geotechnical Engineering guidance for pit and waste dump designs and foundation engineering for mine infrastructure
  • Day to day management of consultants and external reviews and authoring the study report chapters
  • Support and drive continuous improvement across the project
  • Preparing and planning risk assessments with key stakeholders;
This will be a challenging and fast-paced role, requiring you to confidently navigate through some uncertainties as the project evolves.

What You’ll Bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have
  • A strong focus on Safety
  • A suitable degree qualification in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, mining or civil engineering, or earth sciences
  • You will be a highly motivated individual with extensive surface mining, geotechnical engineering and hard rock projects experience
  • Expertise in geotechnical investigations and analysis relating to pit slope design
  • Demonstrated project studies experience and ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team, positive approach to delivering to tight deadlines and strong communication and influencing capability
  • Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships with both internal stakeholders and external consultancies
  • Excellent report writing skills, attention to detail and an ability to problem solve
  • If you have a master’s degree or PhD in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering and a relevant professional society membership your application will be highly regarded.
  • Capability in French language (written and or spoken) is considered advantageous.

The role is ideally based in our Brisbane hub as part of our Rio Tinto Copper Surface Mining technical team.
