We have an opportunity for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to undertake design activities for pump stations, pipelines, small to large treatment plants and other facilities applying a wide range of engineering practices.

Whilst the position is based in Queensland, the position supports local and national projects primarily focused on the water and wastewater industries.

The Principal Mechanical Engineer may also manage projects and proposals to ensure achievement of the required quality, cost and schedule metrics whilst establishing and maintaining a network of client contacts.

Skills are likely to have been acquired through an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum of 15 years related experience.

Key Skills and attributes

  • Under general supervision, performs all conventional aspects of the functional area subject matter. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Plan, schedule, and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Perform work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Assist in the formulation and implementation of strategic relationships with organisations that will assist KBR in expanding the Water/Wastewater Engineering business, particularly in QLD, specifically targeting water and wastewater treatment.
  • Maintain the necessary profile within the market to bring credibility to KBR’s presence in the market
  • Establish relationships with key clients based on sound knowledge of the business climate, market direction and current market constraints
  • Secure opportunities to bid work from established and new relationships by strategic positioning, client and partnership management
  • Lead and deliver technically sound, appropriately costed, well written and easily understood tender proposals
  • Exhibit extensive knowledge of Industry standards and practices
  • Mentor and actively develop less experienced Mechanical Engineers and others as appropriate
  • Undertake the role of Lead Mechanical Engineer and/or Project Engineering Manager on projects to complete the planning, design and execution to meet or exceed client expectations within agreed budgets and schedule.
  • Supervise project staff (process staff if process discipline lead, or project staff if project engineering manager) and review deliverables to ensure compliance with technical and quality assurance standards

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) or equivalent
  • 15+ years related industry experience
  • Significant Water/wastewater Industry experience
  • Registration as a RPEQ
  • Ability to build relationships and maintain rapport with clients, colleagues and managers
  • Technical expert with design/ project management experience
  • A pro-active approach to solving problems and the ability to work autonomously
